Police shoot dead teenager during suspected armed robbery

Police fatally shot a 19-year-old from Rey Hill during a suspected armed robbery at a supermarket on the eastern end of Anguilla.

The incident took place sometime after 4.45pm on 7 July when officers were diverted to the scene after attending an unrelated matter.

An investigation has been launched to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident, a statement from Royal Anguilla Police Force said.

The name of the young man has not yet been made public.

“Evidence from the scene indicates that the deceased entered the supermarket and was in the process of committing an armed robbery, prompting immediate action from the police,” the statement said.

It added that a non-police-issued firearm was recovered from the supermarket.

“Our thoughts are with all those affected by this tragic incident. The deceased’s next of kin have been informed and will be kept updated with the investigation,” police said.

“We understand that the community will be shocked by this event. However, It appears to have been an isolated incident, and there is no wider threat to the public.”
