One month on, still no update in killing of Anguilla resident in St Lucia

A month after the fatal shooting of 26-year-old Anguilla resident Kenrelle O’Flaherty in St Lucia, authorities have yet to release any updates on the investigation.

Multiple requests from Anguilla Focus to Vern Garde, commissioner of the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF), over the past weeks have gone unanswered.

Meanwhile, authorities in Anguilla have remained similarly tight-lipped, with no public statement issued by any official body regarding the death.

O’Flaherty, a United Kingdom citizen living in Anguilla, was found lying on a road in Garrand, Babonneau, at about 10.50pm on Tuesday, 28 October.

In a video report shortly after the incident, Assistant Superintendent Eldeen Henry, who oversees the northern division, said police found “apparent gunshot wounds” on his body.

St Lucia police have not provided any public update on the case in the weeks since.

Anguilla Focus contacted the Royal Anguilla Police Force (RAPF) and the Governor’s Office in Anguilla for further information but received limited responses.

The RAPF press office confirmed on 19 November that it had “liaised with our colleagues in St Lucia regarding this murder”.

When pressed for further details, the RAPF added: “It would be inappropriate for the RAPF to comment on another force’s ongoing investigation.”

Kim Cutler, deputy head at the Governor’s Office, told Anguilla Focus it was “a profoundly tragic incident”, adding: “Our thoughts remain with Mr O’Flaherty’s loved ones at this time.”

She explained that the RAPF is responsible for liaising with St Lucian authorities on the investigation, and said the Governor’s Office has not been approached by the victim’s family for support.

“In the event of any such request, it would be led by the relevant Anguillian authorities,” she said on 20 November.

Cutler added that UK government travel advice for St Lucia is available online here, but did not say whether the office has made contact with the country’s authorities on the security of its visitors.

The Premier’s Office has not responded to any requests from Anguilla Focus for comment.

Anyone with information on the killing of Kenrelle O’Flaherty can contact the RSLPF Major Crimes Unit on (758) 456-3754 or 456-3756.
