A year of care: FirstStarts delivers 100th baby kit to Anguilla’s newborns

FirstStarts – a programme providing free supplies for newborn babies in Anguilla – has celebrated a milestone with the delivery of its 100th Essential Baby Kit.

The initiative was launched on 13 November 2024 when Glenneva Hodge of GLH Productions, the non-profit behind the project, presented the first kits to the Department of Health Services.

A year later and members of the programme have handed over their final kit.

The donation marks the end of the pilot year, made possible through “community care, collaboration and compassion”, the FirstStarts team said in a statement on 4 November.

“We extend heartfelt thanks to the Government of Anguilla, our partners, and every donor who believed in this vision and helped us reach this moment,” it added.

“Your support ensured that 100 new families received the essentials they needed to start their journeys with dignity and care.”

GLH Productions, driven by its mission to empower women and enrich communities, developed the FirstStarts programme to help families navigate the early stages of parenthood.

Inspired by Finland’s baby box programme, the organisation carefully curated the kits to include the essentials needed during the first few months.

Each kit contains vital items such as diapers, wipes, clothing, blankets, towels, hygiene kits and more, ensuring that every baby has an equal and healthy start.

The project was funded by an EC$50,000 government grant, alongside private donations from individuals and non-governmental organisations.

The 100th kit included a baby photoshoot from Marz|Sim Visuals, a US$100 gift certificate to Dream Baby Store and an EC$100 Best Buy voucher for baby essentials, sponsored by GLH Productions.

“As we close this chapter, we remain hopeful that additional funding will be secured soon to continue this vital work – ensuring no newborn or family has to go without the support they deserve,” FirstStarts said.
