New airport terminal is still on track for November opening, says project consultant

The new multi-million-dollar terminal at Clayton J Lloyd International Airport remains on schedule for completion and opening by November.

Canadian aviation consulting firm, Avia NG Airport Consultants, shared the update on 20 June, adding that construction of the 4,650 square-metre building is “moving at a record pace”.

The firm’s online statement explained that over two-thirds of the new facility is complete and full operations are on track for November.

“The roof has been poured, waterproofing and mechanical installations are underway, and most doors and windows are now in place,” the company said.

“Meanwhile, the crews inside the building are progressing nicely, having installed most of the mechanical and electrical infrastructure.”

Avia NG Airport Consultants added that the construction teams are now beginning the “finishes scope”, which includes tiles, painting and drywall.

On the civil side, it said, the parking lot is mostly poured, taxi stand/plaza foundations are underway, and the stormwater system is nearly complete.

It added that foundations for the wastewater treatment plant are wrapping up, and roadwork for the new airport entrance and apron access is advancing.

“Momentum is strong, and excitement continues to grow as the project team drives towards a successful terminal completion,”  the statement said.

St Kitts and Nevis construction company Kelly Construction and Aecon Group based in North America were awarded the contract to build the new terminal.

The groundbreaking for the structure took place in March 2024 and construction work began in April the same year.

It is part of a EC$473 million airport project, which includes expansion of the runway and apron, envisioned in the government’s Airport Masterplan 2022-2041.

Upon completion of the new terminal, the old terminal will be demolished to make way for further apron expansion.

In February, the government released a video walkthrough of the new terminal blending real footage of ongoing construction with a detailed digital rendering.
