An infant has died following a serious road traffic collision on Jeremiah Gumbs Highway in Little Harbour, police have confirmed.
Two adults who were also in the vehicle involved in the crash near Kingdom Citizens Ministries International were injured and remain under medical care.
In a press release, the Royal Anguilla Police Force said emergency services were called to the scene at about 5.05pm on 10 August after receiving reports of a collision.
One of the adult occupants was reportedly ejected from the vehicle, while the other sustained injuries.
The infant, who was found inside the vehicle and taken to hospital by ambulance along with one of the adults, was later pronounced dead.
The second adult was transported to hospital in a civilian vehicle. Police said both are receiving medical treatment and arrangements are being made for their continued care.
The name or age of the infant is being withheld at this time pending the completion of the necessary procedures and notification of next of kin, police said.
The vehicle involved has been removed from the scene and secured. Police said further details on the cause of the collision will not be released at this stage.
A section of the Jeremiah Gumbs Highway near Kingdom Citizen Church in Little Harbour was closed between noon and 2pm on 11 August to allow investigators to carry out further examinations.
Motorists were advised to use Blowing Point Road as an alternative route and to expect delays.
In the press release, police reminded motorists to wear seatbelts, ensure children are properly secured in appropriate child restraint systems, obey speed limits and avoid driving while impaired or distracted.
“The loss of a young life is a tragic reminder that road safety is a shared responsibility. Every decision made behind the wheel can have lasting consequences,” the press release said.
Police have recorded 32 road traffic collisions in Anguilla so far in August, with the latest crash the only serious incident.
