Tourism Unit restores national flags at Anguilla’s historic water wells

The Tourism Unit has restored the large national flags at Anguilla’s two historic water wells in West End.

Bedney’s Well and Roger’s Well, originally dug in the mid‑1800s, provided fresh water for drinking, cooking, washing and daily needs when running water was not yet available island‑wide.

In 2020 they were formally restored and opened as heritage and tourist‑attraction sites, complete with huts, signage and painted with the national colours.

They now serve as important community gathering spaces and also attract visitors eager to explore the island’s history and appreciate its cultural significance.

In a Facebook post on 2 December, Tourism minister Cardigan Connor said: “These wells are more than landmarks, they are symbols of our heritage, resilience and community spirit.”

He added: “This restoration is part of our mission to ensure that all flags throughout Anguilla are restored, preserving our history and enhancing the beauty of our island for generations to come.”

The project was carried out with the support of ANGLEC and the active involvement of its linesmen.
