Community invited to take a stand against gender-based violence

Members of the public are invited to attend a rally marking the launch of Anguilla’s 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign.

The event will take place on 25 November – International Day for the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women – at the Ebenezer Methodist Chapel in the Valley, starting at 6.30pm.

The global campaign, held annually from 25 November to 10 December, aims to raise awareness and unite communities in collective action.

This year’s theme, ‘Awareness to action: Reshaping culture, ending the cycle’, highlights the need to transform the cultural norms that allow gender-based violence to persist.

The launch rally will feature a keynote address by Jacqueline Sealy-Burke, a global consultant and social justice expert who has shaped gender equality, child protection and justice reforms across the Caribbean.

The programme will also include performances from Anguillian artists who will use their platforms to inspire change and solidarity.

“Gender-based violence affects every sector of society,” the Gender Affairs Unit said in a press release on 13 November.

“It requires a whole-of-community response, where everyone – government, civil society, faith-based organisations, men, women and youth play a part in creating a culture of safety, dignity and accountability.”

The weeks following the launch will feature community outreach, training sessions, school engagement and collective advocacy activities.

The campaign is hosted by the Gender Affairs Unit, in partnership with the Department of Social Development, the Women’s Commission of the Methodist Church in the Caribbean and the Americas Anguilla Circuit, and the Ebenezer Women’s Circle.
