Powerful 6.5 magnitude earthquake east of Guadeloupe felt in Anguilla

Tremors from a 6.5 magnitude earthquake located 163 kilometres (101 miles) east of Guadeloupe were felt in Anguilla this morning.

The seismic event hit at 8.38am at a depth of 9km (5.6mi), according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) – a global earthquake monitoring agency.

Several aftershocks have followed including a 5.2 magnitude at 8.46am, a 6.1 at 8.55am, a 5.4 at 9.26am, a 4.2 at 9.52am, and a 3.8 at 10.36am.

The USGS classified the event as “significant”, however, because of its distance from land, only weak to light shaking was felt across the Leeward Islands.

Residents in Anguilla have taken to social media to report their experiences, with one saying: “My earthquake alarm went off in my house and I felt it in Anguilla.”

Another said: “I feel it by the drugstore by Paramount. I were sitting in the car n I feel the little shaking. I look around in the car to see if someone were shaking my car. It were not too long.”

Others wrote: “Felt in The Quarter, felt long too”, “Felt in Sandy Ground, Anguilla”, and “I felt it in the west”.
