Rey Hill man sentenced to one year in prison for firearm and ammunition offences

A 24-year-old man from Rey Hill has been jailed for one year after he pleaded guilty to illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Ockeem McDonald has also been ordered to pay fines totalling $3,000 for two traffic offences – or face a further seven weeks in prison.

On 27 March, officers of the Royal Anguilla Police Force apprehended McDonald for possession of a firearm and ammunition, as well as for driving without a valid licence or insurance.

He appeared before the Magistrate’s Court on 23 October where he pleaded guilty to all charges against him, a police press release said on 24 October.

McDonald was sentenced to 12 months in prison for possession of firearm and six months – to run concurrently – for possession of ammunition.

The magistrate also ordered him to pay a fine of EC$500 by 31 October for driving without a driver’s licence – or face a further three weeks in prison.

For the offence of driving without insurance he was sentenced to pay a fine of $2,500 by 31 December – or face another month in prison.

McDonald was remanded to His Majesty’s Prison in The Valley to begin serving his sentence.
