Orealia Kelly Primary School took first place in this year’s Inter-Primary School Anguilla Day Quiz, held on Wednesday, 28 May.
The annual competition, organised in celebration of Anguilla Day, brings together the island’s primary institutions to test their knowledge of national history, civics and culture.
The quiz is traditionally a six-school event, however, this year’s event at Morris Vanterpool Primary School in East End saw only three teams take part, a press release from the Department of Education said.
Chief education officer Bren Romney said that while the absences were unfortunate, he was pleased with the commitment shown by the schools, students, teachers and parents who supported the event.
“We must continue to honour and celebrate our national heritage. I commend those who prioritised this important occasion,” he said.
His comments were echoed by Avon Carty, director of the Department of Youth and Culture, which co-sponsors the annual event alongside the Department of Education, and funds the prizes.
Despite the smaller turnout, the competition remained fierce. The final scores were close across all three teams.
Vivien Vanterpool Primary School, representing by students Cornaijah Mathurine and Lenisha Smith, placed third with a total of 89 points..
Valley Primary School secured second place with a score of 92 points, thanks to Leeanne Warner and Qiana Hodge.
The Orealia Kelly Primary School team, made up of Keidranique Lake and Adjoa Carty, clinched the top spot with a score of 98 points.
This year’s Quiz Mistress was Sandra Fahie, education officer for curriculum, who was supported by a team of educators and officials.
Tracelyn Hamilton, education officer for student support services, assisted with the questions.
Scoring was handled by IT teachers Shanette Smith and Denise Warrington, while timekeeping duties were carried out by curriculum officer for numeracy, Rene Wills.
Spotters for the event included teachers Vanicea Fleming, Marquita Hutchinson-Mills and Ameeya Woodley.
Teacher Nerys Flemming served as chairperson, and Natasha Allwaters delivered the vote of thanks.
Susan Smith, education officer for primary and pre-primary, coordinated the entire event and distributed prizes alongside a Department of Youth and Culture representative.
The Department of Education congratulated all participants and extended gratitude to mentors, teachers, families and sponsors for their continued support.
On 21 May Orealia Kelly Primary School won the Inter-Primary School Spelling Bee competition.
