Government advances plans for a new national tourism policy for Anguilla

The government is moving forward with plans for a new national tourism policy to set out how Anguilla’s tourism industry should develop in the years ahead.

According to tourism minister Cardigan Connor, the Ministry of Tourism is in the process of procuring specialist technical advisers to assist with the policy’s development.

Speaking during a press conference on 26 October, he said the policy will provide a long-term strategic framework for the sustainable development and management of the industry.

Connor first mentioned the policy in July, when he said the Tourism Unit was in the process of issuing expressions of interest for the policy and standards framework.

At the time, he said the initiative was expected to begin in late 2026 and continue throughout 2027.

He said the previous policy had expired and the Sustainable Tourism Master Plan (STMP), a 10-year strategic framework, has been outdated since 2020.

“In developing the new policy, the ministry will collaborate with regional partners and adapt relevant frameworks… to ensure alignment with regional best practices and sustainable tourism objectives,” he said.

He cited OECS Sustainable Tourism Action Plan, a regional framework outlining priorities for sustainable tourism development across the eastern Caribbean.
