Without reservation, I wholeheartedly support the CJLIA expansion project. The only question now left, in my humble opinion, is whether we should go all out to immediately compete with St Maarten or advance the project incrementally.
The cautious approach is to advance incrementally and ‘pay-as-you-go’ (the Anguilla way). We should always be mindful that the ‘.ai’ bonanza is not guaranteed to be around forever.
Additionally, the incremental approach allows other aspects of the tourism industry, the additional infrastructure projects necessary to support expansion of tourism, to catch up and to address any environmental issues that may pop up.
Expanding to a 2,134m runway is a good start, but the plan to further expand should not go dormant.
Given our current ‘budget’, this much we should be able to finish without plunging the island further into debt.
