Former principal Rita Celestine-Carty has been appointed as the Department of Education’s new education officer in professional development.
She will be serving Anguilla’s education system through supporting teacher training and empowerment with a view to achieving excellence in their practice.
In a press release on 23 July, chief education officer Bren Romney said Celestine-Carty brings a wealth of experience in school leadership, curriculum implementation, and an understanding of teacher needs.
“Having a former principal leading this new division at the Department of Education can lead to more effective and targeted support programmes for teachers,” he said.
“Additionally, she has strong management, communication, and interpersonal skills, making her well-suited for HR roles.”
Experienced educator
Celestine-Carty has over 30 years of experience as an educator including ten in senior management at Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School (ALHCS).
She worked as deputy principal from 2015 to 2018 and then as principal from 2018-2024, which comprised the post-Hurricane Irma and Covid-19 periods, the press release said.
This meant she had to cope with the challenges of remote education, split-scheduling and the 2023 relocation to the quarter campus.
She has also served at regional level as assistant examiner, subject panelist, curriculum review team member and item writer at the Caribbean Examinations Council.
And currently she is an executive member of the Caribbean Association of Principals of Secondary Schools.
Celestine-Carty said she will ensure that the strategic and operational human resource management needs of the Department of Education are identified and addressed effectively on an ongoing basis.
“I look forward to continuing to make my contributions in the onward and upward trajectory of the provision of education services in Anguilla,” she said in the press release.
