Department of Education launches national team to strengthen teaching quality

The Department of Education has established a National Instructional Leadership Team to strengthen teaching quality and student engagement across Anguilla.

The team will support teachers through collaboration between schools, shared lesson planning, the review of work plans and the exchange of effective teaching practices.

During a government press conference on 12 October, education minister Shellya Rogers-Webster said the chief education officer is leading the team, which held its first working session on 28 September.

The minister said the team will manage and support the various grade-level professional learning communities that were launched during Planning Week.

Rogers-Webster explained that in these communities teachers are grouped by grade level and get together to plan lessons, review work plans and improve the quality of teaching and instruction.

“So even if you are at a school where it’s just you alone in that school… you have a larger community… outside of just your school and your grade level that you can communicate with,” she said.

She explained that the new team is “all about giving teachers additional support, but also giving teachers the autonomy to be able to support each other and share best case practices”.

The establishment of the National Instructional Leadership Team is an outcome of the biannual National Symposium on Instructional Leadership.
