A disused basketball court in The Valley has been officially handed over to a recently established non-profit organisation for restoration.
Valley South United (VSU) plans to refurbish the facility to provide a safe and welcoming space for local youngsters to engage in sports and community activities.
Cordell Richardson, Valley South representative, spoke about the group’s plans during a meeting of the Anguilla House of Assembly on 24 June.
He explained that, VSU was registered in April as a non-profit organisation committed to the enhancement of the Valley South region.
Its mission, he said, is centred on the mobilisation of funding and resources to meet local development needs while fostering unity, sustainable growth and an improved quality of life for all residents.
In a small ceremony on 20 June, VSU signed a 20-year lease agreement for the basketball court with the family of the late Ashley Brooks Senior.
“We at VSU are excited about the restoration of this important community facility, which we envision as a vibrant space for young people from across the island,” Richardson said.
“We look forward to the support of the wider community as we restore new life into this basketball court.”
He said the project honours the enduring legacy of the men and women who have championed basketball in The Valley since the 1980s.
“In particular, we recognise and commend Mr Emmanuel Webster for his dedicated work over the years,” Richardson continued.
“It is our hope to pay that dedication forward by ensuring today’s youth have the opportunities and facilities they deserve to strive.”
