Anguilla’s Deandra Fleming and Lavesha Richardson have claimed the top position in the Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association’s U21 Beach Volleyball Championship.
The talented pair, both members of the Anguilla Amateur Volleyball Association, won gold at the competition in St Kitts and Nevis on 1 September.
Their path to the finals began on 30 August with two matches. They defeated British Virgin Islands by a score of 21-4, 21-9 and lost to Bermuda 8-21, 17-21.
On 31 August, the playoffs began. Fleming and Richardson defeated team St Kitts and Nevis 21-2, 21- 15 to advance to the quarter finals.
In the quarter finals, they played against the defending champions, Dominica. Team Anguilla won that match 10-21, 21-14, 15-13 to advance to the semi-finals.
On 1 September, they played the semifinals match against the second place team from a year ago in Antigua and Barbuda. That match they won 21-18, 21-17.
This set up the finals between team Anguilla and St Lucia. The match concluded in straight sets with team Anguilla defeating St Lucia by a score of 21-17, 22-20.
Trevon Smith and Shaquoy Reid also represented Anguilla in the male competition.
They were not as fortunate. They had a two and one record in pool play but lost in the first round of the playoff to Bermuda.
“This loss was devastating as it took the team out of medal contention,” a press release from the Anguilla Amateur Volleyball Association said.
The team ended the tournament with a four and two record which landed them in ninth place overall. There were 13 teams present in each pool for this tournament.
