Anguilla welcomes luxury cruise ship Explora I for the first time

Anguilla marked a significant milestone for its tourism industry on 27 December with the first visit of the luxury cruise ship Explora I.

Several local tourism representatives boarded the 813 foot vessel for a special ceremony to celebrate the occasion, according to a government Facebook post.

In a short speech, Tourism Minister Haydn Hughes emphasised that Anguilla has long been a destination for discerning travellers seeking luxury and exclusivity.

“The arrival of Explora I is a testament to our commitment to diversifying our tourism product while preserving the exclusivity and authenticity of our island,” he continued.

“This growing market not only enhances visitor arrivals but also creates opportunities for local businesses to thrive.”

Economic boost

Explora I, which has a capacity of up to 700 passengers and 600 crew, features spacious oceanfront suites, several high end restaurants, and personalised service.

Its itineraries focus on off-the-beaten-path destinations, delivering immersive cultural and leisure experiences.

Melisha Maccow-Niles, chair of the Anguilla Tourist Board, said Anguilla’s ability to attract high-end cruise lines underscores the island’s reputation as a sophisticated and sought-after destination.

“Luxury cruise visitors bring an immediate economic boost, benefiting restaurants, beach bars, and local tour operators,” she said, according to the Facebook post.

“These arrivals also open doors for future extended visits as passengers may choose to visit our island as stay-over guests for their next vacation.”

Parliamentary secretary Merrick Richardson agreed that it was an exciting moment for Anguilla as the island continues to position itself in the luxury tourism sector.

“The arrival of Explora I aligns with our vision for sustainable tourism growth and high-value visitor experiences,” he said.

‘Unique essence’

While on board, the Anguilla Tourist Board showcased Anguilla’s signature offerings, including its beaches, dining, and welcoming community, in a presentation to the passengers and crew.

Deputy tourism director Chantelle Richardson said day trippers from Explora I would be able to experience the “unique essence” of Anguilla, from its pristine beaches to culinary offerings.

“These experiences not only generate revenue but also reinforce Anguilla’s position as a premium destination in the global market,” she said.
