Anguilla electricity fuel surcharge climbs to record high of EC$1.20 per kWh

Anguilla’s electricity fuel surcharge has increased to a record EC$1.20 per kilowatt hour this month, according to the latest figures from ANGLEC.

The additional charge to cover fluctuating fuel costs had remained unchanged at $0.42 for nearly a year before a series of increases began in April, when it more than doubled to $0.88.

It climbed to $1.04 in May before falling over the next two months to $0.97 in June and $0.85 in July, then rose again to $1.05 in August, where it remained in September.

The surcharge will be added to ANGLEC’s standard electricity tariff, which ranges from $0.43 to $0.63 per kWh depending on monthly consumption, and reflected in customers’ bills in early November.

In a press release on 30 October, the power company said: “As global fuel prices fluctuate, we have implemented both increases and reductions to reflect changing market conditions.

“We remain committed to passing on reductions as soon as market conditions allow, as we have done in the past, and will continue to keep customers informed every step of the way.”

Certain ANGLEC customers will continue to receive a discount on their electricity bills as the government’s fuel surcharge relief continues.

Households, apartments, public services, eligible stores and shops will pay a maximum rate of $0.42 per kWh.

Hotels, villas, guesthouses and associated tourist accommodation accounts are no longer eligible for the government subsidy.

Other commercial accounts will have their fuel surcharge capped at $0.52 per kWh for the month of October, $0.65 per kWh for both November and December.

“We take this opportunity to express our gratitude to customers for their continued patience and understanding,” ANGLEC said.

The Anguilla Electricity Company (ANGLEC) is a publicly traded company in which the government controls the majority of the shares.
