Investigating officers from the British Virgin Islands have submitted their report on the fatal police shooting of a teenager in Anguilla.
Nineteen-year-old Shane Flemming was shot and killed by police during a suspected armed robbery at Island Supermarket in White Hill sometime after 4.45pm on 7 July, 2024.
The Royal Anguilla Police Force immediately launched an investigation and then, just days later said that, in accordance with policy, investigators from the BVI had been invited to conduct their own review.
Nearly two months later, on 5 September, two detectives from the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force’s Major Incident Team arrived to carry out investigations.
A spokesperson from the Royal Anguilla Police Force said the investigators had been “delayed due to circumstances beyond their control”.
This week, Commissioner of Police Robert Clark told Anguilla Focus that the BVI officers’ final report is with the Attorney Generals Chambers “for consideration”.
He explained that Jacqueline Vanterpool, Acting Commissioner of Police in the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force, handed over the report on 17 January.
“The family have been updated, and we await the decision from AG’s Chambers,” he said.
A police press officer said the officer/s involved in the shooting had been offered psychological support and their duty status has “not been made public”.
