Anguillian footballer makes international headlines for his knee-length dreadlocks

An Anguillian footballer has attracted international attention for his knee-length dreadlocks, with his distinctive look featured by major media outlets around the world.

Aedan Scipio, 27, is currently playing in midfield for Anguilla’s national men’s team in the Concacaf Nations League.

His team suffered a 5-0 defeat to Antigua and Barbuda in their first group fixture at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua on 27 September.

However, it was not just the score that drew interest from viewers of the live streamed match, but the impressive length of Scipio’s hair.

The footballer, who came onto the field in the 69th minute, had it tied in bands to keep it under control, with another wrapped around his waist to keep it close to his body.

Unfortunately, his hair became the subject of two violations from the Antigua and Barbuda team when it was tugged firstly by Keon Greene and then later by Shalon Knight.

Both players were given red cards and sent off, leaving the opponents with just nine players in stoppage time.

A flurry of media outlets have picked up the story, including the BBC, ESPN and Yahoo Sports, while social media content creators have also shared it widely.

ESPN said: “Scipio’s hair is so long that, when tied back, it is only a few inches off the ground and it immediately became the target of fouls from his rivals.”

Meanwhile, the BBC said: “While the forward’s lengthy locks may be his standout feature, they can be somewhat of an operational hazard.”

Speaking during a meeting of the Anguilla House of Assembly on 30 September, opposition member Haydn Hughes thanked Scipio for bringing attention to Anguilla.

“Aidan Scipio should receive a hero’s welcome when he returns to Anguilla because of the actions of the opposing team,” he said.

“Over two million and counting have viewed the footage… I know all eyes will be on Anguilla, and I’m very happy.

“Whatever it is that can shine the light on this beautiful country, the most beautiful country in the entire Caribbean. So thank you, Aidan.”

Anguilla played their next match against the Aruba on 30 September at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua where they lost 2-0.

The team sits at the bottom of the Group B table with zero points.
