Island Harbour man, 30, charged with murder after shooting leaves two dead

A 30-year-old man has been charged with murder in relation to the shooting deaths of two men in Island Harbour earlier this week.

Delrado Harrigan of Island Harbour was charged on 30 April, police said in a press release. The number of charges was not specified.

He appeared before the Magistrate’s Court and was remanded in custody at His Majesty’s Prison pending the outcome of further proceedings.

The Royal Anguilla Police Force received a report of shots fired in Island Harbour sometime between 5.30am and 6am on 27 April.

Police and emergency personnel responded to the scene, where two males were discovered with apparent gunshot wounds to their bodies. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers continue to investigate the fatal incident and have not yet released the age or identity of the deceased nor the exact location of the shooting.

In a joint statement, Governor Julia Crouch and Premier Cora Richardson Hodge offered their deepest condolences to the families, friends and loved ones of the two who dies.

“Violence has no place in our society. We stand with the people in rejecting the taking of life of any individual, and are dedicated to fostering peace, security and respect for human life,” they said.

The governor and premier offered their full support to the Royal Anguilla Police Force as they investigate the deaths and pursue a number of active lines of inquiry.

Speaker of the Anguilla House of Assembly, Tara Carter, warned during the latest meeting on 28 April that the island appears to be caught in a cycle of violence and inaction.

She urged members from both sides to complete their work on preventing gun crime and violence in Anguilla.
