The incident prompted a reminder from police for road users to exercise caution, particularly during periods of reduced visibility such as early mornings when the sun is low.

“Every road user has a responsibility to act with care, caution and respect for life,” police said, adding that cyclists are among the most vulnerable road users.

“A moment of distraction, excessive speed or poor judgment can have devastating consequences not just for those involved, but for families and the wider community,” the reminder continued.

Drivers are being urged to slow down, give cyclists adequate space when overtaking, and remain alert for cyclists and other vulnerable road users at all times.

Meanwhile, cyclists are urged to ride predictably and obey traffic rules, stay as far left as practicable and ensure their bicycle is roadworthy.

Police also reminded that all users must obey the Vehicles and Road Traffic Act which says:

  • Drivers who operate a vehicle recklessly or dangerously can face imprisonment, fines and disqualification from driving
  • Causing death by dangerous driving is a serious criminal offence with penalties including imprisonment
  • In the event of a collision, a driver must stop and provide their information or report to the police within 24 hours
  • Cyclists must not ride more than two abreast on the roadway, keep proper control of the bicycle at all times and not carry more people than the bicycle is designed for
According to the latest Crash Count on 22 April, there have been seven serious and 28 minor road traffic incidents in April to date.
