Blowing Point sports centre on track to open by year’s end

The construction crew has resumed work at Blowing Point’s new sports centre, aiming to have the facility ready to host a regional tournament by year’s end.

The government announced the start of the project – which includes a covered basketball court, stands and a paved car park – in May 2023.

Clearing at the site began in June 2023, and at the time the government said the it expected the project to be completed “within a three month window”.

A post on the government Facebook page on Friday, 16 August, said progress had been delayed because “all hands were on deck” at the new Landsome Bowl Cultural Centre.

The US$5 million centre, which opened at the end of July, took just six months from design to near completion.

But now it is “back to work” at the sports centre for the team from GT Construction, a local firm that the government contracted for both projects, the post said.

Next week, the company plans to have the blocks for the second floor in place and will start interior plastering on the first floor.

Dee-Ann Kentish-Rogers, the minister responsible for sports, and infrastructure minister Haydn Hughes hope to host the first regional tournament at the centre before the end of 2024, the post added.
