Zharnel Hughes and his teammates secured a podium finish at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, taking bronze for Great Britain in the men’s 4×100 metres relay.
The win comes after the record-breaking Anguillian athlete dropped out of the men’s 200m competition due to hamstring tightness that he picked up in the semi-finals of the men’s 100m.
The final of the 4x100m took place at the Stade de France on Friday, 9 August, and Hughes ran the last leg.
His team completed the race in 37.61 seconds, coming just behind the silver medal winning South African team at 37.57 seconds and the gold medal winning Canadian team at 37.5 seconds.
In a Facebook post on Sunday, 11 August, Hughes wrote: “Grateful to be walking away from the Paris 2024 Olympics with a medal and proud of these guys for coming together as a unit and getting the job done.
“I appreciate all the love and support over the last couple of days, thank you all.”

Hughes placed sixth in the semi-final heat of the 100m on Sunday, 4 August. His race time of 10.01 seconds meant he did not progress to the final round.
In a Facebook post on 5 August, he said he was “gutted to have missed out in the 100m after a few weeks of trying to be race ready”, adding that “unfortunately, wasn’t meant to be this year”.
He continued: “Picked up a hamstring tightness in the semis of the 100m and due to that, I will have to miss the 200m to focus on recovering.”
Hughes has both the British 100m and 200m records and won his first global individual medal, a bronze, in the 100m at the 2023 World Championships.
