Residents in Anguilla should see a drop in grocery prices from Thursday, 19 December, as a new law takes effect eliminating tax from essential food and drinks.
The Goods and Services Tax (Amendment) Act, 2024, which was passed in Anguilla House of Assembly on Tuesday, states that the tax will no longer apply to certain grocery items.
The exemption covers most food and drinks, including meat, vegetables, fruit, rice and water, but excludes alcoholic beverages and confectionary.
Retailers in Anguilla are required by law to adjust their prices to reflect the removal of goods and services tax.
The newly established Consumer Affairs Unit will monitor pricing to ensure fair practices and provide updates as needed.
It will also help consumers understand pricing mechanisms and address concerns related to zero-rated items.
Anyone who suspects discrepancies can contact the Consumer Affairs Unit on (264) 497-2547 or 476-0717.
The full list of foods and drinks that will be exempt from goods and services tax is available here.
