Supporting Families Programme welcomes new senior social worker

Former police officer Denise Samuel has been appointed as a senior social worker in the Ministry of Social Development and Education’s Supporting Families Programme.

The programme supports families with any number of challenges that law enforcement or social service agencies have flagged up.

Samuel from Rey Hill brings a wealth of experience from 11 years with the Royal Anguilla Police Force to the role.

She has worked in the Safeguarding Investigation Unit, as major incident manager in the Criminal Investigation Department, and as chair of the Child Safeguarding Committee.

A press release from the social development ministry on 31 July said: “Her time as a police officer was marked by her commitment to justice, integrity, and the well-being of the community she served.

“While Denise found her work in law enforcement fulfilling, she often encountered individuals and
families in crisis who needed more support than the criminal justice system could provide.

“This realisation inspired her to make a significant career change.”

Samuel went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from the University of West Indies, graduating with first-class honours.

A valuable perspective

In her new role, her focus will be on providing comprehensive support to those in need, assessing
individuals and families to determine needs, and identifying areas of risk for vulnerable people.

In conjunction with the team, she will connect clients with essential resources.

Her unique background gives her a valuable perspective in her social work practice, allowing her to approach each case with a blend of empathy and practical problem-solving skills, the ministry said.

“Denise Samuel’s journey from police officer to social worker exemplifies her unwavering dedication to
serving and uplifting her community,” the press release continued.

“Her career is a testament to the impact one person can have when they commit to making a difference, no matter the field.”

In a Facebook post on 31 July, the police force said Samuel demonstrated “exceptional leadership and dedication” through her roles.

It continued: “We have no doubt she will continue to make a meaningful impact within the community.

“Join us in congratulating Mrs Denise Samuel and wishing her all the best in her new journey.

“Your contributions to the Royal Anguilla Police Force will always be remembered, and we are confident you will excel in your new role.”

The Supporting Family Programme aims to cater to the specific needs of each family using a multi-agency approach to address various challenges that affect them and their communities.

It uses agencies already working in Anguilla’s communities with children, young people and adults, in crime prevention and peace building initiatives, and education.
