Superfood Breadfruit Festival features recipes from across the Caribbean

Anguilla hosted its first Superfood Breadfruit Festival this past weekend showcasing a variety of food and drinks made from the versatile tropical fruit.

The event brought together chefs and home cooks from across the Caribbean, each sharing unique recipes that highlighted the breadfruit’s adaptability in both traditional and modern dishes.

The event, which has been running for several years on different Caribbean islands, was hosted by Sensational Flavours, KBM and the Association Nouvelvwa.

Among those attending were farming and culinary representatives from Dominica, Trinidad, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Antigua, St Lucia, St Martin and Grenada.

Speaking during a introduction event a day earlier, award-winning Chef Naz from Trinidad, described breadfruit as more than an ingredient, adding: “It’s symbolic of who we are as Caribbean people.”

He continued: “Long before it was called a superfood, breadfruit sustained generations, nourished communities, and provided food security in challenging times.

“Today, breadfruit represents opportunity – from farming and processing to baking, culinary innovation, and agro tourism.

“It creates new job paths especially for our youth, while strengthening local economies and reducing dependency on importation.

“It also carry tremendous health benefits – natural, gluten free, rich in fibres and essential nutrients – breadfruit support, while fitting seamlessly into modern diets.”

The Anguilla event was supported by the Department of Natural Resources, the Ministry of Tourism, and several local businesses.
