Submissions open for diabetes awareness poetry competition

Poets are invited to explore the challenges of diabetes and the strength of resilience and support in Anguilla’s first World Diabetes Day Poetry Competition.

The National Chronic Diseases Unit, in partnership with the Anguilla Diabetes Association and Malliouhana Poetry, launched the contest under the theme ‘Strength in Every Drop’.

Diabetes is responsible for 20 percent of non-communicable disease deaths in Anguilla each year. It can also cause blindness, kidney failure, heart attacks, strokes and amputations.

The poetry competition aims to raise awareness and give a voice to those affected by diabetes, a press release from the Ministry of Health explained.

“We encourage all poets and those passionate about diabetes awareness to participate and help bring this serious problem to light,” it added.

Anguilla residents aged 16 and over can submit original, typed poems of no more than 40 lines before the deadline of 14 November.

Prizes include EC$500 and breakfast for two at Tasty’s Anguilla for the winner, $300 and a gift certificate for Tackle Box for second place, and $200 and lunch for one at Cajun Goat for third place.

Submissions can be emailed to anguilla.mpc@gmail.com or delivered to the Anguilla Public Library. For more information, contact the library at (264) 497-2441.

Winners will be announced on 30 November at the Lions Club’s flash mob dance off in observance of World Diabetes Day.
