South Valley unites in celebration of history, pride and community

South Valley came alive this weekend with a new event that brought together multiple generations in a powerful celebration of pride, history and community spirit.

South Valley Rising, the latest initiative from the South Valley Community Club to highlight the journey and resilience of the district and island, took place on Saturday, 24 May.

It featured special guests including Dr Oluwakemi Linda Banks and former Queen Show contestants Blondell Rodgiers and Anne Edwards, who shared moving recollections of the 1967 revolution.

Roy Carty also joined, recounting his role in the iconic Dawg Pound boat rides and the unforgettable Around the Island experiences that have become part of Anguilla’s cultural fabric.

The day’s programme included stirring musical performances by local talents Dwytea and Latest, along with the unveiling of the South Valley Wall of Fame.

The wall serves as a tribute to community members whose legacies continue to inspire, even if they could not be present.

A striking mural, designed by South Valley’s own artist Kadeem ‘Kank’ Carty, added a vibrant visual element to the celebration.

In addition, the Legacy Circle was introduced, honouring the boats that shaped Anguilla’s national sport and the leaders who have carried the community’s spirit through the decades.

The event was made even more special by the presence of former community representatives spanning the past 50 years, standing united in pride and solidarity.

Filled with music, delicious food, laughter and vibrant national colours, the atmosphere was electric – a true testament to the love and patriotism felt across South Valley.

The South Valley Community Club summed up the day in a Facebook post with a powerful message: “When we honour the past, we light the way for the future.”

It extended heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated and supported the event, making it an unforgettable celebration of Anguilla Day.
