South Hill man gets eight years in prison for gun possession

Stephen Hughes of South Hill has been imprisoned for eight years for possession of two different types of guns.

For the offence of possession of a revolver, Hughes was sentenced to six years and six months.

For the offence of possession of an M16 rifle, Hughes was sentenced to eight years in prison.

Both sentences are to run concurrently, with time spent on remand credited towards the sentence, a police Facebook statement on 1 July said.

In a government press conference on 1 July, Premier Ellis Webster mentioned the court hearing and said eight years is a “significant prison sentence”.

“I do hope that this would send a message. This legislation was passed under this administration,” he added.
