Public warned to ignore ‘free education’ phishing scam

The Ministry of Social Development and Education is warning the public to be cautious of fake social media posts offering free education and training courses.

The posts, which claim they are from the Department of Education, should be disregarded, a press release from the ministry said on Tuesday, 16 July.

“Please note that this information is false and is a phishing scam with links that may lead you to unsafe sites, compromising your computer or device,” it read.

Phishing scams are deceptive attempts to obtain sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details through electronic communications by pretending to be from trustworthy entities.

“The public is reminded to be vigilant when using the internet and social media,” the press release said.

The ministry advises the public to:

  • Keep personal information professional and limited.
  • Keep privacy settings on.
  • Practice safe browsing.
  • Make sure the internet connection is secure.
  • Exercise caution when deciding what to download.
  • Choose strong passwords.
  • Make online purchases from secure sites.
  • Exercise caution when deciding what to post.
