Orealia Kelly Primary School (OKPS) emerged as the winner of this year’s Inter-Primary School Spelling Bee competition.
The friendly but tense competition, which was held on Wednesday, 21 May, at Morris Vanterpool Primary School, saw three schools battle for the top spot.
Each team of two students came well-prepared, showcasing strong spelling skills and quick thinking under pressure.
Arudra Bharrat and Elenor Bradshaw stepped up for OKPS, Maliyah Muckett and Aatya Naveen Kumar for AARPS, and Jahdiel Guzman and Ky’Li Brooks-Gumbs for VPS.
The top speller title came down to a tie-breaker among Bharrat and Bradshaw from OKPS, and Muckett from AARPS.
Bharrat was eliminated in round six, leaving Bradshaw and Muckett in a tight head-to-head. Muckett went on to secure the title with 118 points – just two points more than Bradshaw.
At the end of the contest, OKPS clinched victory with 176 points, Alwyn Allison Richardson Primary School (AARPS) followed closely behind with 172 points, while Valley Primary School (VPS) placed third.
In a press release on 23 May, the Department of Education extended warm thanks to telecoms company Flow for its corporate sponsorship and support.
