Offensive weapon charge lands South Hill man in prison for three months

A 34-year-old man from South Hill has been sentenced to three months in His Majesty’s Prison for being armed with an offensive weapon.

Steven Austin was convicted in the Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 9 April, a Facebook statement from the Royal Anguilla Police Force said.

He was also fined EC$350 for the offence of assault, with a four-month deadline for payment. Failure to pay will result in an additional 14 days’ imprisonment.

The charges stem from a report of an “ongoing incident” on 7 April, 2024, that prompted a police response, the statement said.

The day prior, on 8 April, Sharmal Carty, 33, of Black Garden appeared before the Magistrate’s Court charged with possession of an imitation firearm.

He was given bail in the sum of EC$70,000 with one surety and ordered to comply with a daily curfew, not leave Anguilla and keep the peace until his next court date.
