New Clayton J Lloyd International Airport terminal officially opens

Anguilla’s new multi-million-dollar terminal at Clayton J Lloyd International Airport has officially opened, representing a major upgrade to the island’s aviation infrastructure.

The facility spans over 48,000 square feet – more than double the size of the old terminal – and offers departure seating for 240 passengers, along with a mezzanine level bar and lounge.

It also features upgraded security screening for carry-on and check-in luggage, an expanded apron, and easy opportunity for further growth.

An opening ceremony at the facility on Friday, 12 December, brought together government officials, industry leaders, aviation pioneers and community stakeholders to mark the milestone.

The programme, which was chaired by Farrah Banks, opened with introductions by Sherman Williams, CEO of Anguilla Air and Sea Ports Authority.

Williams described the terminal opening as a “remarkable feat”, a historic milestone for the people of Anguilla, and a defining moment in the island’s aviation journey.

A stirring rendition of the National Anthem and National Song by Michael ‘Dumpa’ Martin came next, followed by an opening prayer delivered by the Reverend Wilmoth Hodge.

Kendell Richardson, acting director of public utilities and Ministry of Infrastructure project liaison, presented a detailed project overview.

“This project was born out of a clear and pressing need to modernise our airport infrastructure and create a gateway that reflects the beauty, warmth and ambition that is Anguilla,” he said.

“Our previous facility has served us well, but as tourism continues to grow and air connectivity evolves, we recognise the importance of delivering an experience that meets international standards and anticipates future demands.

“This is not just a building, it is a statement of confidence in Anguilla’s future.”

Richardson outlined the design, engineering and operational readiness work that brought the terminal to completion.

He thanked construction firms Kelly Construction in St Kitts and Nevis and Aecon Group from the United States, as well as Anguilla-based designers V Architecture Design Studios.

Addresses followed from Governor Julia Crouch, parliamentary secretary Cordell Richardson, tourism minister Cardigan Connor, Premier Cora Richardson Hodge, and infrastructure minister Jose Vanterpool.

The governor spoke about the lasting legacy of Clayton J Lloyd who flew the first flights between Anguilla and its neighbouring islands.

“Now we stand here today and see how that same dedication and hard work has created this beautiful new terminal,” she said.

“It’s a worthy tribute to his legacy. It’s the opening of a gateway to opportunity, connection and confidence in Anguilla’s future.”

In his keynote address, Vanterpool highlighted that the new terminal strengthens Anguilla’s ability to attract strategic partners and expand air connectivity.

“This moment is a moment of national significance, marking not only the advancement of an infrastructure project, but the strengthening of our identity as a confident and forward looking nation.

“This terminal represents a step toward the Anguilla we aspire to build – an Anguilla that is more connected, more competitive and more prepared for the opportunities of an ever advancing world.”

While welcoming new international carriers, he underscored pride in Anguilla’s local airlines, praising their resilience, reliability and unwavering service to the nation over the decades.

A highlight of the ceremony was the recognition of 11 aviation pioneers whose contributions helped shape Anguilla’s aviation legacy.

The terminal was then blessed by the Reverend Leroy Errol Brooks and Canon Reid Simon, and executive airport manager Jabari Harrigan concluded the ceremony with a vote of thanks.

Following the ribbon-cutting, dignitaries and pioneers led guided tours throughout the terminal.

The groundbreaking for the structure took place in March 2024 and construction work began in April that year.

It is part of an EC$473 million airport project, which includes expansion of the runway and apron, envisioned in the government’s Airport Masterplan 2022-2041.

The old terminal is set to be demolished to make way for further apron expansion.
