New behaviour guidelines to be rolled out across Anguilla’s primary schools

The Department of Education hosted a three-day workshop this week to review and update the behaviour management plan for primary schools in Anguilla.

The workshop took place from 15 to 17 April at the Adrian T Hazell Primary School in South Hill and saw the participation of teachers, principals, support staff and education officers.

In a department press release, chief education officer Bren Romney said the update is in response to new trends in student behaviour.

“Changing socioeconomic and cultural conditions and evolving education policy impact the school environment,” the press release continued.

“Therefore, adaptation and update of behaviour management plans are necessary to ensure effectiveness and adherence to best practice.”

The workshop was led by consultant Sophia Edwards-Gabriel who serves as the national coordinator of the OECS Programme for Educational Advancement and Relevant Learning.

She has more than 30 years of experience in curriculum development, health and family life education, psychosocial support, child friendly schools, positive discipline and positive behaviour management.

In the press release, Edwards-Gabriel said positive behaviour management is not just about responding to misbehaviour.

“It’s about setting clear expectations, building strong relationships, and teaching students the skills they need to manage their emotions and actions,” she said.
