Movie prop banknotes are circulating in Anguilla, officials warn

Fake US banknotes, originally made as film props, have been circulating in Anguilla, the Financial Intelligence Unit has warned.

Officials are urging consumers, businesses and financial institutions to carefully inspect all denominations during transactions and report any suspicious bills to the police.

The unit issued the scam alert on Thursday, 6 March, adding that the individual or individuals responsible for distributing the counterfeit notes remain unidentified.

It said the motion picture prop money may look authentic if not carefully inspected and urged the public to look out for the following indicators printed on the note:

  • For Motion Picture Only
  • Motion Picture Purposes
  • This note is not legal tender (normally printed on one side of the bill)
  • The president’s name omitted or changed
  • Serial numbers the same on all banknotes

Anyone who receives this money as legal tender should immediately make a report with the Royal Anguilla Police Force at the Valley Station, the Financial Intelligence Unit said.
