The Government of Anguilla has committed to help those affected by Hurricane Melissa as the major storm continues on its path through the Caribbean.
The rare Category 5 storm with maximum sustained winds of 165 miles per hour was located about 145 miles southwest of Kingston in Jamaica as of 11am on Monday, 27 October.
The National Hurricane Center has predicted that the slow-moving cyclone will turn north later today or tonight, and the eye will pass over Jamaica’s central and western districts.

It is expected to bring “catastrophic and life-threatening” winds from this evening, as well as flooding and storm surges.
In a statement on 25 October, the government extended “heartfelt thoughts and prayers” to those who are or will be affected by the passage of the storm.
“Our hearts are with the families facing uncertainty, the communities preparing for impact, and the brave first responders working tirelessly to safeguard lives and property during this challenging time.
“We stand in solidarity with our Caribbean brothers and sisters as we confront the challenges brought by this storm.
“The spirit of unity, resilience and compassion that defines our region will once again see us through recovery and restoration.”
The statement added that all Anguillian students studying in Jamaica have been safely evacuated and arrangements have been successfully coordinated to ensure their well-being.
They were expected to arrive home in Anguilla on 26 October.
“We are deeply grateful to the government and people of Jamaica, as well as to the families and officials who assisted in ensuring the safe return of our students,” the statement said.
“As we continue to monitor the situation throughout the region, the Government of Anguilla remains committed to offering support where possible and to safeguarding the welfare of our citizens both at home and abroad.
“Together, we will rebuild, recovers and rise stronger.”
