Next year Krav Maga Anguilla will not need to pay customs duty on goods imported for the business, thanks to a motion that was passed in the Anguilla House of Assembly.
Owner Hilroy Alfred plans to import gym equipment, racks, ceiling fans, a humidifier, foam mats and a drinks fridge between 12 December, 2024, and 11 December, 2025.
The cost of the items totals just over EC$15,500, and with duty ranging between 10-15%, the tax break will save the company just under $2,500.
Premier Ellis Webster, who is also finance minister, proposed the motion during a meeting of the assembly on 23 July.
He told members that one of the policies of the government is to encourage health and fitness and said similar exemptions have been granted in the past.
Dee-Ann Kentish-Rogers, Minister of Education and Social Development, rose to support the motion.
She said Alfred was a school friend of hers who has made a name for himself within the fitness industry both locally and internationally.
“He’s been doing quite a significant amount of work, not only in the area of fitness… but also in terms of self-defence and protection for women, for young people,” she added.
Kentish-Rogers said Alfred continues to strive to do more for Anguilla’s people as a leader and a mentor in his community.
The tax exemption, she said, will allow him to expand Krav Maga Anguilla on Waterswamp Road and will be a positive development for the island.
Opposition member Jose Vanterpool, on rising to support the motion, said he remembered Alfred from school and recalls when he began his bodybuilding journey.
Vanterpool said he is pleased he is now “helping build and foster persons confidence through not only martial arts but also in self-defence, helping them realise their capabilities”.
Opposition member Shellya Rogers-Webster also rose to back the motion, saying that Alfred has demonstrated his commitment to the wellbeing of Anguilla’s citizens.
The premier, in his response, thanked the members standing in support of the motion and said it is important to back young people in these endeavours.
All members voted unanimously for the motion and it was passed.
