High school placed on temporary lockdown after emailed threats

The Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School was closed and its Quarter Campus placed on lockdown after threatening emails were received on 14 May.

The Department of Education released a statement in the early afternoon in which it said there had been no incidence of violence but the school was assessing the threat.

It said the Royal Anguilla Police Force was in attendance, and asked parents, guardians, students, teachers, staff and the public to remain calm.

The statement urged people not to attempt to enter the Quarter Campus where the gates were secured until the all-clear was given.

“This will allow law enforcement and school officials to manage the situation efficiently and ensure everyone’s safety,” it said.

“Once clearance is received, parents will be allowed to collect their children and buses will be available to transport students home. CXC exams continue to be scheduled as planned.”

The Department of Education said it “understands that this is a distressing time” but stressed that the safety and security of all students, teachers, staff and exam candidates is paramount.

In a press statement the same day Premier Cora Richardson Hodge said the threats were received via email and had been made against certain students at the school.

This caused concern and fear among students, teachers, staff, parents and guardians, she said.

A police press release later said officers had conducted a full sweep of the premises to assess and secure the environment.

Once it was deemed safe, students were released into the care of their parents, guardians or transported home via school buses.
