Heavy rainfall causes widespread flooding and closure of airport

Heavy rainfall on Saturday, 17 May, resulted in the temporary closure of Clayton J Lloyd International Airport and forced the cancellation of several local events.

The sudden downpour during the afternoon overwhelmed drainage systems, causing flooding in streets and public spaces across the island.

The Department of Disaster Management issued a flash flood warning for low-lying and flood-prone areas, urging residents to take immediate precautions.

Later the same day, a press release from the airport said heavy rainfall had resulted in significant water accumulation throughout the airport’s operational areas.

It said this posed safety risks to aircraft, passengers, staff and critical equipment.

Airport closure

The airport said the Anguilla Air and Sea Ports Authority had made the “difficult but necessary” decision to suspend all flight operations until further notice.

It did this in the interest of public safety and with a commitment to upholding international aviation standards, the press release explained.

The airport said its team was actively monitoring the situation, and subject to weather conditions improving, anticipated resuming normal operations on Sunday, 18 May.

‘Travellers are encouraged to check with their respective airlines for flight specific updates and to follow media outlets for timely information,” the press release said.

“We appreciate the public’s understanding and cooperation as we prioritise the safety of all who use and operate within our facilities.”

Sports Festival

The Sports Festival scheduled for Sunday, 18 May, was also cancelled after flooding at the Ronald Webster Park made the venue unsafe for participants and spectators.

“We regretfully announce that the Sports Festival, an activity on the Anguilla Day calendar of events, has been cancelled,” a government press release said.

“This festival is an opportunity that our communities and sporting associations look forward to for the fun, friendly competition and community spirit and as such we share in your disappointment.

“Safety is a priority, however, and as such we appreciate your understanding the need for the cancellation of the event.”

The press release said Anguilla remained under a storm watch, and urged the public to be careful as they travelled to their various destinations.

“Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to celebrating with you at future events,” the press release said.
