Former Mariners resort site on Sandy Ground listed for sale at US$10m

The site of the former Mariners Cliffside Beach Resort, located along the southwest stretch of Sandy Ground, is now on the market with an asking price of US$10 million.

The 8.5-acre parcel, which includes over 600 feet of beachfront property, is set beneath the South Hill cliffs and within a short walk of the landmark Pamead shipwreck.

The large lot features more than 20 building shells – once used as holiday cottages, a reception and a beach bar at the resort – as well as a disused swimming pool and tennis court.

Island Dream Properties says the land is zoned to allow hospitality, condominium or mixed-use development, though plans would remain subject to planning approval once a sale is approved.

The real estate company’s listing suggests that the site, which has road access as well as electricity and water connections in place, could be used to develop a luxury boutique hotel or resort.

Other possibilities include a condominium or residential community, or a mixed-use compound combining hospitality, retail and lifestyle offerings, it says.

History of Mariners

Mariners, a collection of West Indian‑style vacation cottages, opened its doors on Sandy Ground in 1983 as one of Anguilla’s first resorts, according to the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association.

It quickly became a familiar part of the island’s tourism scene with its relaxed and friendly atmosphere attracting regular overseas visitors.

At the height of its popularity, the resort, which was set among carefully curated gardens, was celebrated for its Caribbean charm, seaside dining and lively music events.

After 12 years in operation, in September 1995 it was damaged by Hurricane Luis – a rare, slow-moving Category 4 hurricane – leading to its temporary closure.

According to former news website Anguilla News, new owners took over the property, renovated it and rebranded it as Mariners Cliffside Beach Resort before its reopening in 1997.

After a second closure due to the passage of Hurricane Lenny, which struck as a Category 3 storm in November 1999, the resort reopened again in December 2000 under new management.

Over the past few decades, the renowned resort has had limited documented activity, though the characterful concrete structures throughout the plot remain largely intact.
