Fire captain trained in BVI to instruct on search and rescue boat skills

Captain Barney Gumbs of the Anguilla Fire and Rescue Service has completed a two-week train-the-trainer programme for search and rescue boat operators.

The regional training course, held in the British Virgin Islands as part of the Overseas Territories Search and Rescue (OTSAR) Capability Project, took place from 13 to 24 January.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) and HM Coastguard conducted the course in order to revalidate six current trainers and train six new delegates.

Participants included representatives from Anguilla, Bermuda, the Cayman Islands, Montserrat, and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

According to a statement from the Anguilla Fire and Rescue Service, the course aimed to improve rescue proficiency and disseminate knowledge across the region.

David Whiddon, senior international programmes manager at RNLI has collaborated with Anguilla on different programmes to enhance understanding and skills in search and rescue capabilities.
