A FIFA grass management expert visited Anguilla to assess its football fields and offer advice on improving grass quality, maintenance and long-term sustainability.
The Anguilla Football Association (AFA) hosted Xavi Tordera during his trip as part of an ongoing initiative to uplift the island’s football infrastructure, according to a press release on 5 March.
One of the football fields he visited was the National Stadium pitch – an important venue which hosts local, regional and international competitions.
His in-depth evaluation covered all aspects of the field, from its current condition to the suitability of the grass type used, the effectiveness of the existing irrigation system, and overall management practices.
Community fields
Tordera visited four key community football fields around the island which are vital for grassroots football and the development of young talent.
He provided valuable insight into how the pitches could be better maintained and enhanced with recommendations including strategies for better playability, longevity and environmental sustainability.
While in Anguilla, Tordera also met with two contractors responsible for maintaining the fields across the island and they discussed their experiences and challenges.
He offered them tailored recommendations, ensuring they are equipped with the knowledge and tools needed to keep the football pitches in optimal condition.
Long term strategy
One of the highlights of Tordera’s visit was his collaboration with the AFA to develop a comprehensive, long-term maintenance strategy for the island’s football fields.
This strategy outlines the best practices for field care, from routine maintenance to crisis management, and includes a detailed timeline for both short-term and long-term improvements.
The plan will serve as a roadmap for the AFA in ensuring that all football facilities are well-maintained and capable of supporting the island’s growing football community.
AFA president Girdon Connor said he was grateful for Tordera’s visit from 2 to 4 March and the expert guidance he provided.
“His advice will help us ensure that Anguilla’s football facilities are on par with international standards,” he added.
