Anguilla’s trainee plumbers are putting their skills to work, offering fully supervised, no-cost repairs for minor plumbing issues.
The Community Services Planning Unit is hosting the service as part of the Social Up-Skilling Programme’s ‘Basic Plumbing Stream’.
As part of their training, the students will undertake small-scale plumbing tasks in domestic homes and local businesses under the guidance of an experienced instructor.

“These activities reinforce their training through supervised, real-life application,” a press release from the unit said on 17 September.
The unit added that the service will also help to build the trainees’ confidence, competence and improve their employability while contributing to the community.
Tasks can include:
- Fixing or replacing leaking taps
- Changing tap heads or washers
- Unclogging sinks and minor drains
- Carrying out small pipe fittings or adjustments
- Installing or repairing simple fixtures under supervision
- Performing basic toilet repairs
- Checking or assisting with basic water pump maintenance
Any advanced repairs or full installations should be referred to a licensed professional.
This initiative is part of a broader community-based programme aimed at the rehabilitation, empowerment, and reintegration of vulnerable youth and young adults.
The Social Up-Skilling Programme blends technical training with mentorship, life skills and wraparound social support.
This year, the unit has focused on three primary streams: plumbing, basic electricity and cosmetology.
These technical entry points are delivered within a wider social intervention framework that includes numeracy and literacy, mentorship, soft skills development, emotional intelligence and financial literacy.
Upon completion, the participants may transition into full-time employment, pursue further education, explore entrepreneurship, or enter an apprenticeship facilitated by the Department of Youth and Culture.
