Demolition of Anguilla’s former international airport terminal nears completion

Demolition of the former Clayton J Lloyd International Airport terminal, located just behind the new facility, began on Monday, 12 January, and is now nearing completion.

The work will allow for the next phase of the airport project – expanding the apron to provide increased space for aircraft and improving access to the new terminal.

Executive airport manager Jabari Harrigan shared his thoughts on the former terminal in a short speech on 14 December as it permanently closed its doors.

“For decades, this terminal building has been more than just concrete, steel and glass – it has been a gateway to the world and a warm embrace home.

“It has witnessed forced arrivals and final departures, joyful reunions and heartfelt goodbyes.

“It has carried the footsteps of generations, residents, visitors, dignitaries, students, families and friends, all passing through its halls as Anguilla continued its journey forward.”

He thanked those who envisioned and built the terminal for their hard work that laid the foundation for modern aviation in Anguilla.

“With limited resources but limitless commitment, you created a facility that served this island faithfully and with pride,” he continued.

“Through hurricanes and recovery, growth and challenge, this terminal stood resilient, adapting as best as it could to meet the demands of its time.

“To the many airport employees past and present who work within these walls – your dedication gave this building life, from early mornings to late nights, from the quiet off season to the busiest travel days.

“You ensured safety, service and hospitality. You turned a modest facility into a place of warmth, professionalism and genuine and brilliant welcome.”

Harrigan also thanked the partners, airlines, ground handlers, security agencies, customs and immigration officers, contractors and stakeholders who made the terminal work beyond its limits.

“Together, you delivered excellence, often in challenging circumstances, and ensured that the Clayton J Lloyd International Airport were made a proud gateway to our island,” he said.

“This building holds countless memories and milestones. It tells the story of where we have been, how far we have come, and the resilience of a people who never stopped believing in progress.”

“This terminal represents growth opportunity and our commitment to excellence in aviation and national development.

“As we move forward, we do so carrying the spirit lessons and legacy of the old terminal with us. Its service has ended, but its impact will forever remain a part of our story.”

Anguilla’s new multi-million-dollar terminal officially opened on 15 December, representing a major upgrade to the island’s aviation infrastructure.

The facility spans over 48,000 square feet – more than double the size of the old terminal – and offers departure seating for 240 passengers, along with a mezzanine level bar and lounge.

It also features upgraded security screening for carry-on and check-in luggage, a soon to be expanded apron, and easy opportunity for further growth.

An opening ceremony at the facility on 12 December brought together government officials, industry leaders, aviation pioneers and community stakeholders to mark the milestone.
