Aurora to host town hall meeting to address employees’ concerns

A town hall meeting will be held sometime in the next week to address concerns from staff at the luxury Aurora Anguilla Resort and Golf Club.

Labour minister Kenneth Hodge made the announcement during a government press conference on Monday, 27 January.

“A considerable number of workers have been expressing their concerns to me, as well as to other ministers of government, about what they say are undesirable practices at the property,” he said.

Hodge added that over the past few months, he has engaged in productive discussions with owner Richard Schulze and other senior management officials.

“I would have made a promise to the workers with whom I would have spoken that I will seek to have Mr Schulze hold a town hall meeting so that staff could air their concerns,” he said.

“I have received the confirmation that that town hall meeting will take place sometime during the course of next week.”

He encouraged workers to take the opportunity to speak directly with the owner when the date is announced.

“I will monitor the outcome of these discussions and undertake follow-up actions as necessary,” he added.

Hodge stressed that he maintains an open door policy and workers are always welcome to drop in to see him at any time.

Despite the grievances, the labour minister acknowledged the considerable investment Schulze has made in the resort.

“It has been described as one of the most prominent properties on the island’s tourism landscape,” he said.

Hodge also highlighted Schulze’s social contributions, including the provision of an MRI machine and support for the school feeding programme.

“All of us are extremely appreciative,” he said, adding: “We wish him and his team well.”
