Anguilla records inflation fall in first months of 2026 amid mixed price movements

Anguilla saw a drop in the cost of household items and transport during the first quarter while recreation and hotel prices rose, according to the latest figures.

The Anguilla Statistics Department released its 2026 Q1 Consumer Price Index on 9 April which shows the rate that the price of a basket of goods and services changes over a period of time.

The index indicated a small overall drop in inflation of 0.7% during January to March compared to the previous quarter.

Four of the 12 categories included in the data contributed to the decline, three stayed the same, and five showed an increase.

Price drops

Of the categories that saw price drops, the ‘transport’ category registered the largest percentage decrease, with a 5.8% reduction compared to the previous quarter.

That was mainly due to ‘passenger transport by air’ decreasing by 10.3% and a 7.4% decline in gasoline and diesel which the department said may be due to a ceiling price being introduced in January.

The ‘furnishing, household equipment and routine household maintenance’ category was the second largest decrease, dropping by 3.6% over the last quarter.

This was due to the decrease in the average prices in the sub-categories including ‘household appliance’ (-9%), ‘furniture and furnishings’ (-5.9%), and ‘tools and equipment for house and garden’ (-3.1%).

The ‘clothing and footwear’ category recorded a reduction of 0.4% due mainly to a 1.9% decrease in the average price of the ‘clothing’ sub-category while ‘footwear’ increased 7.8%.

‘Food and non-alcoholic beverages’ saw a small 0.3% decrease over the last quarter, mainly due to drops in the ‘meat’ (-6.3%), ‘fruit’ (-1.4%), ‘food products’ (-3.6%) and ‘oils and fats’ (-0.1%) sub-categories.

Price increases

Recording the largest increase was the ‘recreation and culture’ category which saw a 6.2% rise, mainly due to a 33.3% bump in the sub-category ‘audio-visual, photographic and information processing, equipment’.

The ‘restaurant and hotel’ category recorded an overall increase of 2.3% due to an increase in prices in both the ‘accommodation services’ and ‘catering services’ sub-categories by 54.3% and 0.7%.

The ‘miscellaneous goods and services’ category recorded an increase of 1.3% due to the rise in the ‘personal care’ and ‘personal effects’ sub-categories of 3.7% and 1.1%.

‘Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuel’ registered a small quarterly increase of 0.2%.

Meanwhile, the categories ‘health’, ‘communication’ and ‘education’ remained unchanged over the previous quarter.
