Acting premier sends sympathies after Dominican Republic nightclub collapse

Acting premier Cardigan Connor has extended his sympathies to members of the Dominican Republic community in Anguilla following the collapse of a nightclub in Santo Domingo.

At least 220 people were killed when the roof caved in at Jet Set Club at about 1am on Tuesday, 8 April, while renowned merengue singer Rubby Pérez was performing.

Hundreds more were injured in what is believed to have been a tragic accident caused by structural failure.

Rescue workers ended the search for survivors late on Wednesday, 9 April, following a nearly two day operation.

In a Facebook statement, Connor extended his “heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathy” on behalf of himself, the government and the people of Anguilla.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who lost loved ones, those injured, and all who have been impacted by this devastating incident,” he said.

“In moments like these, our community stands united in support, compassion, and solidarity. May strength and comfort be with you all during this difficult time.
