Anguillian teenager jailed for three years for illegal possession of a loaded gun

A teenager who admitted to hiding a loaded gun inside a toilet tank in his home in Spring Path has been sentenced to three years in His Majesty’s Prison.

Deshawn Corbett, who was 18 at the time of the offence, appeared before Justice Ermin Moise in Anguilla High Court on 15 July where he pleaded guilty to both possession of a firearm and ammunition.

The charges stem from 19 March, 2024, when officers from the Royal Anguilla Police executed a search warrant at Corbett’s home while he and his father were present.

During the search, police found a Glock .40 S&W semi-automatic handgun and a magazine containing 12 rounds, both hidden in the toilet tank.

According to the court judgment, delivered on 16 July, Corbett had stated: “It’s mine but not really mine, but I’m holding it for somebody, but I can’t say who. I not getting involved in that.”

He was arrested and taken into custody where during a police interview he said he had been in possession of the gun for one week and was given it by someone “to hold”.

Low risk

The pre-sentence report said Corbett had no previous convictions, strong family ties and was not known to be involved in gangs.

He was cooperative and there was no evidence of bad or inappropriate behaviour while he was in prison prior to his sentencing.

Corbett had attended Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School but was suspended in his final year so completed his secondary education in a private institution.

He also worked as a fisherman since leaving school, earning himself an average of US$1,500 per month.

The report concluded that Corbett posed a low to medium risk of reoffending, a low risk of harm to others and a low risk of harm to himself.

Justice Moise imposed a sentence of three years for each charge to run concurrently.

At the time, Corbett had already spent 482 days on remand, which will be credited towards his sentence. He must serve a further 613 days in custody to complete it.
