A serving police constable with the Royal Anguilla Police Force has been charged with importation of a controlled substance.
The charge relates to a small package that was referred to HM Customs following routine screening at the General Post Office, police said in a press release on 8 July.
On Friday, 4 July, the unnamed officer was contacted by the General Post Office to collect the package, and upon arrival he was told it had was now with customs officers.
During inspection, about 0.7 grammes of “what appeared to be cannabis seeds” was discovered, the press release said.
HM Customs charged the officer on the same day who is now on suspension pending the outcome of the court proceedings.
“The Royal Anguilla Police Force takes all allegations of this nature seriously and continues to cooperate fully with HM Customs as the lead investigating agency,” the press release said.
“As this is an active legal matter, no further comment will be made at this time.
“The RAPF reminds the public that all persons are entitled to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty in a court of law.
“Members of the public are also urged to rely on official sources for accurate and verified information regarding this or any other police matter.”
The matter was first made public during a press conference on 7 July, when a member of the media asked Acting Commissioner of Police Haslyn Patterson for confirmation of the incident.
Anguilla Focus has contacted the police press office to clarify why the officer has not been named and is awaiting a response.
